Modern living in the electropolis

Around 1900, Schöneweide became known far beyond the Berlin area as an industrial site and modern “electropolis”. Together with the industrial plants, a residential area was created in which typical neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau forms of the time have been preserved. The later residential buildings were oriented toward reform architecture with spacious courtyards and gardens.

With its dynamic design, the local housing development of the 1920s is one of the outstanding testimonies of modernism in southeast Berlin. In the 60s, further settlements of the type Q3A (cross-wall type No.3) were added – an example of the early industrial construction of the GDR.

Light and transparency

A discovery tour through the masterpieces of industrial construction – the daylight factories from the historic Oberschöneweide transformer plant.

The “aesthetic factory buildings” bear witness to the new objectivity in industrial construction. Light walls encase the steel skeleton like a skin of glass. The monumental assembly hall is supported by steel frames and enveloped by “curtain walls”. The glazed side walls provide ideal lighting conditions in the production area.

Light & Magic

For photographers, the industrial district in Schöneweide offers fascinating motifs. Join professional photographer Paul Langmead on a tour of discovery through the historic founding center of Berlin’s electrical industry. Patched facades, tracks leading to nowhere, cranes and rusting giant tanks – hidden witnesses of the vanished large-scale industry. The decommissioned transformer plant offers industrial charm with countless details, while rusting machine parts lure visitors to the cable plant next to piled-up cable drums – a paradise for detail-loving photographers.

Paul Langmead gives helpful tips and tricks – also for analog photography and without complicated technical vocabulary. For the crowning finale you climb the tower of the Peter Behrens building. A photo location with a great Berlin panorama, sensational in any light!

Hint:
The exact course of the tour depends on the weather and the wishes of the participants. Please remember to wear appropriate clothing. Your own tripod is recommended!

Heroes of labour

Schöneweide came into being with large-scale industry – characterized by the rhythm of the machines, accompanied by smoke from the chimneys, noise and stench. In the beginning, the workers in the factories had to endure hard physical labor and long working hours. Only slowly did things change. The tour is a journey through time to the authentic places of work. Stories are told about the people who worked here over the last 120 years.

The tour begins with Anna, who started working at the cable factory as an unskilled worker in 1897. At a further six stops, everyday working life in different times is reported. Finally, the tour includes a visit to a high-tech company. The experience of today’s working world is described from the perspective of a female laboratory technician. The tour is also linked to current questions about the prospects for the “brave new world of work.
